Kerala Rain Toll Reaches 15 as Seven Remain Missing and Relief Operations Continue Statewide

Guwahati, August 6: The death toll in rain-related incidents across Kerala has risen to 15, while seven people remain missing as heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of the state.

According to the state government, Kottayam district reported three deaths, including two people in the Poonjar Assembly constituency and a child who drowned after falling into a water tank.

Ernakulam recorded two deaths, while one person each died in Idukki and Muvattupuzha. Kollam reported two deaths, Malappuram four, and one death each was reported from Kannur and Kozhikode.

Authorities said seven people are still missing. Two people each are missing from Kollam and Kannur, while one person each is unaccounted for in Malappuram, Idukki and Muvattupuzha.

As of 9 am on Wednesday, 316 relief camps were operating across Kerala, providing shelter to 11,018 people displaced by heavy rain and flooding. The figures were shared after a review meeting on the flood situation held by the state government with senior officials.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala on August 6, along with strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast due to the possibility of strong winds of up to 60 kmph and rough sea conditions.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves ranging from 2.7 to 3.5 metres along the northern Kerala coast and advised fishermen and coastal residents to remain cautious.
