Assam Floods: Death toll rises to 82, affected population falls to 1.92 Lakh

Assam’s flood situation showed signs of improvement on July 31, with the number of affected people dropping below two lakh, even as the death toll rose to 82 after two more fatalities were reported, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The latest deaths were reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district and Sonari in Charaideo district. Officials said there were no reports of anyone remaining missing.

Floodwaters continued to affect five districts : Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat and Nagaon, covering 17 revenue circles and 379 villages. A total of 1,92,799 people remained impacted by the floods.

Charaideo recorded the highest number of affected residents at 77,456, followed by Sivasagar with 63,492 and Jorhat with 34,067. The latest figures mark an improvement from the previous day, when more than two lakh people across eight districts were affected.

Authorities were operating 54 relief camps, where 12,994 displaced people were taking shelter. Another 26 relief distribution centres were providing essential supplies to 5,384 people.

Rescue and relief operations continued with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies deployed across the affected areas.

The ASDMA said around 15,430 hectares of agricultural land remained submerged. The floods also caused damage to homes, roads and other public infrastructure in the affected districts.
