Assam flood death toll reaches 98, over 1.55 lakh people affected
Guwahati, Aug 8 : Assam’s flood death toll has climbed to 98, while the number of affected districts came down to 13 on Friday, August 7, according to the latest data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The latest flood-related death was reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district.
The number of affected districts dropped from 15 on Thursday to 13 on Friday. The number of people affected by the floods also declined from over 1.68 lakh to 1,55,849.
The districts currently affected by the floods are Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo. Floodwaters have affected 33 revenue circles and 464 villages across the state.
Golaghat has reported the highest number of affected people at 58,750. Sivasagar follows with 48,286 affected people, while Jorhat has reported 25,259.
According to ASDMA, 55 relief camps are currently operating across the affected areas, providing shelter to more than 10,000 people. Another 18 relief distribution centres are also functioning to provide assistance to those affected.
The Dhansiri river is still flowing above the danger level at Golaghat town and Numaligarh in Golaghat district. The Kushiyara river has also remained above the danger mark at Sribhumi.
The floods have affected 10,748.64 hectares of agricultural land, while more than 47,000 animals have been impacted. Damage to roads, bridges, houses and other infrastructure has also been reported from several affected districts, according to the ASDMA bulletin.
