Facebook, YouTube May Face Three-Hour Deadline Under New Government Rules

Guwahati, Aug 8: The government has introduced legislation proposing stricter requirements for social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, in dealing with content published on their services.

The proposed rules cover content considered illegal, objectionable or in violation of government regulations. The measures seek to establish a specific time frame for platforms to respond to notices concerning such content.

Under the provisions mentioned in the report, if a court or government department issues a notice regarding objectionable or misleading content, the concerned platform would be required to remove the content within three hours of receiving the notice.

The proposed rules are aimed at regulating how social media and short-video platforms handle content that is flagged by courts or government authorities.

The legislation would introduce a defined timeline for platforms to act on such notices, while the government’s broader objective is to strengthen the framework governing content on social media services.
